Defense

The use of optical communications for defense applications is largely due to the fiber optic intrinsinc advantages : they are insensitive to ElectroMagnetic Interferences (EMI), do not generate EMI, they enable weightsaving and guaranty huge available bandwidth, etc...
Optical communications thus find their place in the various field of military avionics, signal and image processing for defence, radars, high speed switching and computing… Several military programs currently integrate optical fiber for video or data distribution (A-400M, Eurofighter, F-22, …) and many others are aimed at retrofitting existing equipment to replace copper cable links by fibers (F/A-18, C17…). The use of fibre communication, theoretically bandwidth unlimited, allows the system to be scalable which is very important considering the never-ending electronics performances evolution.
